Mandala Parikrama
Jiva travelled to Navadvipa in West Bengal and met with Nityananda Rama, one of the foremost followers of Chaitanya mahaprabhu. Nityananda took Jiva to all the holy places in Navadvipa and they circumambulated the entire area together. This marked the beginning of the Gaudiya tradition of Navadvipa parikrama (circumambulation of the nine sections of Navadvipa). After the pilgrimage, Nityananda gave his blessings for the young Jiva to proceed towards Vrindavana.

Why Radharani Created Sri Navadvipa-Dhama
In the Ananta-samhita, Siva explains to Parvati why Srimati Radharani created merciful Sri Mayapur-dhama.
Lord Siva told Parvati, “As a bee plays in a lotus, Krsna was enjoying with Viraja in the pleasant forest groves of Vrndavana. Moon-faced, doe-eyed Radhika heard this news from one sakhi and hastily ran to find Krsna.
Seeing that Radha was coming, Krsna suddenly disappeared and Viraja became a river. When Srimati Radharani arrived there, She could not find them. Absorbed in thoughts of Krsna, Radha began to think of how to attract Him away from Viraja.
“She gathered her sakhis together between the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers. She created a beautiful place, decorated with creepers and trees and filled with male and female bumblebees. Deer and bucks were happy enjoing as they wandered about, and the whole area was filled with the fragrance of jasmine, mallika, and malati flowers. That transcendental abode was adorned with tulasi forests and decorated with varous groves. On Radha’s order, the Ganga and Yamuna, with their pleasant water and banks, acted as a moat to protect the garden. Cupid himself, along with springtime, eternally resides there, and the birds constantly sing the auspicious name of Krsna.
“Radha, dressed in colorful cloth, then began to play a beautiful melody on a flute in order to attract Krsna. Attracted by that melody, Krsna appeared in that enchanting place. Radha, the attractor of Krsna’s mind, seeing that Krsna had come, held His hand and experienced ecstatic delight. Then Krsna, understanding Radha’s mood, spoke in a voice choked with love.
“O lovely-faced Radha, You are My very life. There is no one more dear to Me than You. Therefore I will never leave You. Just for Me You have created this wonderful place. Staying with You, I will transform this place, filling it with new sakhis and groves. The devotees will glorify this place as New (nava) Vrndavana. As this place is like an island (dvipa), the wise will call it Navadvipa. By My order, all the holy places will reside here. Because You have created this place for My pleasure, I will live here eternally. Those people who come here and worship us will eternally attain our eternal service in the mood of the sakhis. O dear Radha, like Vrndavana, this place is extremely pure. If anyone comes here just once, he will obtain the results of going to all sacred places. He will quickly attain devotional service, which satisfies us.’
“O Parvati, “Lord Siva continued, “I have described to you the reason for the appearance of Navadvipa. When heard by mankind, this narration removes all sins and bestows devotional service. Whoever rises early in the morning and with devotion to Gaura recites or hears this story of Navadvipa’s creation will certainly attain Gauranga.”

9 Islands of Navadvipa Dham => Navadha Bhakti
The area of Sri Navadvipa Dhama is divided into nine divisions, called islands. Within the central island of Antardvipa is Mayapur. This entire area is considered a holy place. Each one of these divisions represents one of the nine processes of devotional service. The nine divisions are:
1) Antardvipa, Sri Mayapur (surrendering everything);
2) Simantadvipa (hearing);
3) Godrumadvipa (chanting);
4) Madhyadvipa (remembering);
5) Koladvipa (serving the lotus feet);
6) Ritudvipa (worshipping);
7) Jahnudvipa (praying);
8) Modadrumadvipa (being a servant); and
9) Rudradvipa (being a friend).
When you do Gaura Mandala Parikrama you visit each island in the order that is listed.

Story
Just as in Mayapur when we go to the Simantadwip we tell the story about how Mayadevi saw Lord Siva laughing and asked him why he was laughing and he said well he was thinking of Caitanya Mahaprabhu ‘Gauranga!’ She said as I even hear this name ‘Gauranga’ my hairs are standing on the end – who is this Gauranga? He said “He is the golden avatar of Krishna.” She said “I want to meet him.” Devi said (Parvathi) “How can I meet Him?” And he explained to her who Caitanya Mahaprabhu was and she went to Navadwip Dham and worshipped there. There she could meet Him. So she went to one of the islands near our Jagannath temple and began to worship Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Gauranga.
Constantly meditating on His transcendental lotus feet, chanting His holy name until finally chanting Gauranga Gauranga jaya Gauranga jaya Gauranga, then Lord Caitanya appeared to her with His hair tied up in a brahminical fashion with a flower in the hair and with His lotus eyes going to His ears , His golden form effulgent like the form of Srimati Radharani and His broad chest and thin waist thin like a lion and His arms going down to His knees “ajanulambhitha bujau” and lotus and colorful scented flower garland with bumble bees flying around trying to taste the nectar from His flower garland , from His lotus feet. In this way Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in His transcendentally effulgent form as the golden avatar to mother Paravthi. She fell down at His feet and offered her obeisance. “What do you want, my mother?” said Lord Caitanya.
Mother Parvathi said, “My Lord, You are giving pure love for Krishna to everyone without considering who is qualified, who is unqualified. How will I get delivered by Your transcendental mercy. This is Your quality of unlimited compassion.
I am no better devotee than Maya. I put the (bring) living entities out of Your devotional service and keep them in ignorance. And the devotees, they always criticize me saying Krishna should just come up “krishna -- surya-sama; Maya haya andhakara, yahan krishna, tahan nahi Mayara adhikara” wherever there is Krishna, there is no Maya. That means eternally I am cursed to not be present before You, to not have Your mercy, while everyone is getting your mercy I won’t get. Is this my misfortune never to get Your love for Krishna never to get pure devotion of Your lotus feet? When will I understand what is the highest mercy, the highest mercy, the highest love in pure devotion?”
So Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu took the dust from His lotus feet and put it on her head. So Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “My dear mother Parvathi, you should know that you are the expansion of Yoga Maya, you are ultimately the expansion of Srimati Radharani, you are necessary for me to enjoy my pastimes in this material world. You are the expansion of Srimati Radharani, you are external energy. So here in the holy Dham you are praudha Maya. Praudha Maya, means that here and in Vrindavan you are Pauranamasi. You arrange the devotional service and moods of the devotees and protect the Dham from the Maya intruders.
So, in this way, He blessed her that she could understand at that moment her non-difference from Srimati Radharani as she was the external energy. And she could understand her connection and she came into the mood of pure devotional service, appreciation and love for Krishna and Caitanya Mahaprabhu. She became overwhelmed with ecstatic symptoms and there she resides. Lord Caitanya informed her as praudha Maya; Lord Siva will come as Vriddha Siva in Navadwip Dham. And she keeps those who have not accepted the relationship with Caitanya Mahaprabhu, she keeps them in ignorance and those who have surrendered to Caitanya Mahaprabhu who has accepted their internal relationship as His devotee, she increases their transcendental humor for the Lord. So Maha-maya, she is a great devotee.
